The Phalaenopsis, or 'Moth Orchid', is the most common orchid due to its ease of production and the availability of blooming plants year-round. The culture of Phalaenopsis orchids involves windowsill light and consistent moisture, and they do very well as houseplants, growing and flowering in a moderately bright windowsill.

Unlike many other orchids, Phalaenopsis can be repotted anytime, though it is usually best to do so when not in bloom. A mature phal will be in bloom much of the year with graceful inflorescences loaded with good-sized blooms, ranging from pure whites to unusual spotted harlequins, sure to please.

Each year, a Phalaenopsis will grow one or two new leaves, and once the growth phase is complete, usually in the fall, a bloom spike will emerge from the stem beneath the second or third leaf from the top. Scatter some Phalaenopsis seeds across the top of it before closing with a cotton stopper. Place the jar in bright filtered light for at least six hours per day or under grow lights for 14 to 16 hours daily until you see new roots form on the seedlings' leaves.

Phalaenopsis orchids bloom in the late winter through the spring, and they like to stay generally moist but not sopping wet, always kept in a pot with good drainage. Growing from seed and enjoying the process with your family is a rewarding experience.
