Hesperaloe parviflora, commonly known as the red yucca, is a yucca-like live succulent plant that puts on a delightful display of vibrant colors in dry gardens. The long, narrow, and arching blue-green leaves of this evergreen perennial succulent feature deep grooves and white fibers along the edges, and may blush slightly purple or reddish-bronze during the chilly winter temperatures.

Beginning in summer, clusters of captivating flowers are borne on red stalks that can reach up to 5 ft. to 6 ft. high. These tubular, waxy flowers are coral-red on the outside and yellow on the inside, reminiscent in both shape and color of aloe flowers.

This drought-tolerant and heat-loving plant is native to the Chihuahuan Desert of west Texas and northeastern Mexico, and thrives in a variety of soil types, including poor soils. While it is tolerant of cold down to zero F when established, it appreciates occasional irrigation during the summer months to encourage flowering.

Hesperaloe parviflora is an excellent choice for use as an ornamental highlight in desert landscapes, rock gardens, perennial gardens, or on rocky slopes and hillsides near varieties of perennial ornamental grass. It also thrives in large pots on sunny patios or porches, making it a versatile option for various landscaping settings.

For optimal performance, it is recommended to cut back the plant every year in the spring, after the last hard frost of the season. This evergreen perennial succulent typically grows to a height and width of 3 ft. to 4 ft., and performs best when planted in full sun.
