Sansevierias, commonly known as snake plants, are arguably the most indestructible plants around, with about 70 different known species that are easy to grow, making them a popular choice for plant enthusiasts. These plants can handle any condition, whether it's a dark room or a sunny, hot rooftop, making them an excellent choice for a wide range of environments.
However, snake plants are not without their common issues. Oftentimes, they meet their demise from overwatering and root rot. These plants will not tolerate wet feet or soggy soil, so it's essential to plant them in a pot with a proper drainage hole and a well-draining potting mix. If the pot lacks a hole, you can look up the pot type and determine if it's safe to drill one in on your own. Alternatively, you can add a layer of lava rocks to the bottom of the pot to ensure the roots are never submerged in water.
To prevent root rot, it's crucial to be mindful of your watering habits. The first sign of root rot in a snake plant is a soft stem base or discolored foliage. If you notice any of these warning signs, immediately remove the plant from the soil and remove all signs of rot. Even if you're left with no roots, the plant may stand a chance, as sansevierias are known for their resilience, and as long as you catch the issue early, the plant will survive the infection.
When it comes to planting, growing, and caring for sansevierias, there are a few key considerations:
LIGHT: Place the plant in low to bright indirect light. Direct light is okay, as long as you introduce the plant slowly.
WATER: Water every 2-3 weeks, or when the soil dries completely. Snake plants are highly drought-tolerant and prefer drier soil, but this doesn't mean they never need water. Increase the watering frequency in the summer and slow it down in the winter.
FEEDING: Use diluted plant food once a month in the spring and summer. Avoid plant food in the fall and winter when the plant goes dormant. If you've recently repotted, wait ~6 weeks before feeding.
TOXICITY: These plants are toxic, so keep them out of reach of pets and small children.
This particular snake plant stands out from the rest with its pale, silver-green foliage and bold green edges. It's one of the hardiest houseplants and is extremely adaptable, thriving best with lots of sun, but even growing in low light.
Sunlight: Survives in all light! Water: Once a month. Pets: Not pet-safe! Care: Great choice for the beginner plant parent! Pro-tip: Prone to root rot. Make sure the soil is completely dry in between waterings.
