The scientific name "Dracula Simia" pays homage to the plant's unique blossom, which roughly translates to "little dragon monkey." Some attribute the name "Dracula" to the long, fang-like spikes that emerge from the petals, as well as the dark, blood-red color of certain stems within the family.

Growing up to 2 feet tall, this orchid can produce blossoms in a variety of colors, including red, lavender, and yellow. The pattern of the petals varies greatly from plant to plant, featuring smooth color, dots, or even stripes. However, the defining characteristic of the Dracula genus is the appearance of a monkey-face blossom, consistent across the genus.

Three distinct petals form long spines that originate from the blossom's center and converge to reveal a construction reminiscent of a monkey face. The resemblance to a capuchin monkey, our banana-loving primate companion, is so striking that it may cause a double-take.

These orchids thrive in hardiness zones 9-11. To grow them, simply press the seeds into the surface of the soil, as they require light to germinate. For spring planting, mix the seeds with moist sand and store them in the refrigerator for 60 days before sowing. Keep the soil lightly moist until the seeds germinate.
